Palatini approach to 1/R gravity and its implications to the late Universe

چکیده
By applying the Palatini approach to the 1/R-gravity model it is possible to explain the present accelerated expansion of the Universe. Investigation of the late Universe limiting case shows that: (i) due to the curvature effects the energy-momentum tensor of the matter field is not covariantly conserved; (ii) however, it is possible to reinterpret the curvature corrections as sources of the gravitational field, by defining a modified energy-momentum tensor; (iii) with the adoption of this modified energy-momentum tensor the Einstein’s field equations are recovered with two main modifications: the first one is the weakening of the gravitational effects of matter whereas the second is the emergence of an effective varying ”cosmological constant”; (iv) there is a transition in the evolution of the cosmic scale factor from a power-law scaling a ∝ t to an asymptotically exponential scaling a ∝ exp(t); (v) the energy density of the matter field scales as ρm ∝ (1/a) ; (vi) the present age of the Universe and the decelerated-accelerated transition redshift are smaller than the corresponding ones in the ΛCDM model.

Constraining f(R) gravity in the Palatini formalism
Although several models of f(R) theories of gravity within the Palatini approach have been studied already, the interest was concentrated on those that have an effect on the late-time evolution of the universe, by the inclusion for example of terms inversely proportional to the scalar curvature in the gravitational action. However, additional positive powers of the curvature also provide intere...
متن کامل2 00 3 The minimal curvature of the universe in modified gravity and conformal anomaly resolution of the instabilities Shin
We discuss the modified gravity which may produce the current cosmic acceleration of the universe and eliminates the need for dark energy. It is shown that such models where the action quickly grows with the decrease of the curvature define the FRW universe with the minimal curvature. It is required the infinite time to reach the minimal curvature during the universe evolution. It is demonstrat...
متن کاملHybrid Metric-Palatini Gravity
Recently, the phenomenology of f(R) gravity has been scrutinized. This scrutiny has been motivated by the possibility to account for the self-accelerated cosmic expansion without invoking dark energy sources. Besides, this kind of modified gravity is capable of addressing the dynamics of several self-gravitating systems alternatively to the presence of dark matter. It has been established that ...
متن کاملA no-go theorem for polytropic spheres in Palatini f(R) gravity
Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be consider...
متن کاملHow (Not) to Palatini
We revisit the problem of defining non-minimal gravity in the first order formalism. Specializing to scalar-tensor theories, which may be disguised as ‘higher-derivative’ models with the gravitational Lagrangians that depend only on the Ricci scalar, we show how to recast these theories as Palatini-like gravities. The correct formulation utilizes the Lagrange multiplier method, which preserves ...
